The residential complex at Ruthsweg 16–20 and Oldachstraße 8, comprising 56 one- to three-room flats (built in 1950), is situated in the Barmbek-Nord district. This district in the Hamburg-Nord borough, with a population of around 42,000, is home to the Museum of Work, one of the Hanseatic city’s best-known museums. Set on a former industrial site, it explores the transformation of work over the past 150 years. It is a museum that encourages visitors to get involved. In workshops, visitors can use machines such as printing presses to make objects themselves. In the museum’s courtyard stands the cutting head of the TRUDE (Tief Runter Unter Die Elbe) tunnel-boring machine, which was used to bore the new Elbe tunnel. The cityscape is dominated by red-brick buildings. Nearby lies the Stadtpark, one of the most important local recreational areas in the north. Fuhlsbüttler Straße is a great place for a spot of shopping. The ‘Fuhle’, as it is known locally, has been revitalised in recent years through development projects. The Zinnschmelze, right next to the Museum of Work, is regarded as a hub for cultural activities with a wide range of events. The Bürgerhaus community centre on Lorichstraße also offers a comprehensive programme. Barmbek-Nord is perfectly connected to the public transport network via the Barmbek, Rübenkamp, Alte Wöhr and Habichtstraße stations.
