With 56,000 residents across 3.2 square kilometres, the neighbourhood – which also gives its name to the district – is one of Hamburg’s most densely populated areas. The neighbourhood offers an attractive local recreational area in the form of Eimsbütteler Park. Osterstraße, in particular, is a delightful place to stroll, with its numerous cafés, restaurants and shops. The annual street festival on Osterstraße is one of the largest events of its kind in Hamburg. The Kaifu-Bad on Hohe Weide (built 1893–1895) is the oldest swimming pool in Hamburg and is a listed building. The outdoor pool is heated all year round. The district is very well connected to public transport thanks to the underground stations at Lutterothstraße, Osterstraße, Emilienstraße, Christuskirche and Schlump, as well as numerous bus routes.
